Great Sand Dunes

Beneath the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, you will find the tallest sand dunes in North America. While the park does protect over 30 square miles of sand dunes, it also protects grasslands, wetlands, ancient forests, alpine lakes, and many mountain peaks. I highly recommend hiking up the dunes to the peak of Star Dune at a staggering height of 755 feet. Other fun activities include sand sledding, walking through Medano Creek, and backcountry camping in the sand dunes.
